OF COURSE there was more to dinner than that. Cook saw to it that we had a bowl or two of red-pepper soup to begin with; and then a fine grilled cheese sandwich, and steamed Swiss chard. But it was the dessert that was especially festive today: vanilla ice cream with caramel sauce, and sprinkled on top, chopped walnuts. And not just ordinary garden variety walnuts. These are rather special: red walnuts, with a flavor veering toward the slightly bitter pungency of black walnuts. Delicious.
