Eastside Road, June 27, 2010 —
AFTER THE ROUTINE (and quite delicious) Sunday breakfast of a softboiled egg and buttered toast — and a couple of cappuccinos, of course — we took a long drive to San Jose to see a Wayne Thiebaud retrospective, then back to Berkeley for the memorial service of a long-ago acquaintance: no time between to eat except for a quick Caesar salad at the hotel where the service was held. Afterward, canapés and Champagne for the departed, and then before the drive home a couple of scoops of Mary Canales's delicious ice cream: one of vanilla, as good as any fior di latte I had recently in Italy, and one of crême fraîche and brandied apricots, yum yum. A curious and not wholly nutritious day's eating.
