LUNCH TODAY AT a joint we really like a lot; I wish we had this place nearer home. I had a salad I particularly like, shredded cabbage and carrots, thin fried tortilla strips, and cilantro, dressed with lime juice.Afterward, a duck-confit taco. I can't begin to describe how delicious this is: flavor, texture, visual appearance — it's one of my very favorite things. Not one of the Hundred Plates, to be sure: but indispensable.

DINNER WAS AT the restaurant attached to our hotel, the Ashland Springs Hotel. I had a Caesar salad, not terribly authentic — no anchovies, no egg — and then pot roast and mashed potatoes. The local and sustainable beef was dry and chewy, and I was not impressed.
