Eastside Road, Healdsburg, October 16, 2009—
THE FIRST COURSE was sliced tomatoes and quickly steamed broad beans, and the salad course was the usual green salad. In between we had a bit of a departure; we haven't had lentils for quite a while. Lindsey cooked up lentils with rice into a pilaf, flavored with onions, garlic, and cumin. Lentils have such a deep, chthonic sort of flavor; I don't know why we don't eat them every week.Nero d'Avola

Charles: Did I mention that I ate at Zoe's in Seattle last Friday night?
Very cute little place, corner location with double height ceilings, tastefully decorated, with a full bar one half level up. The bartender made me a perfect version of my latest concoction (2 Compari, 1 lemon, 1 orange, up). I had white fish, my companion pork. A French Graves. Wow.
I asked if the place was new, but they said no, it was a decade old.
You probably know this place. Maybe even who runs and owns it.
Anyway, a recommendation if you're in Seattle.
Driving back, by the way, on the following Tuesday, we were blitzed by the big rainstorm. Racing across those empty stretches south of the Oregon border, we must have passed through 5-6 inches of steady rain, in places that probably don't get twice that much in a whole year! Flat, dry, grassy farmland. All of it pale yellow from a dry Summer.
BTW, do you know sweet potato fries? They're one of our new discoveries. I'll never eat potato fries again, if I can help it!
We hardly ever get to Seattle. We came near a few months ago, but never farther north than Auburn. So, no, I don't know Zoe's: but it goes into the list of places to check out. Thanks.
