We have good appetites, Epicurus knows: we're always ready for our meals. But we don't crave food beyond what's apparently needed to maintain a normal weight, and we don't get hungry between meals.Charles Sherehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10480432901356490235noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4406252458975415348.post-66626553787898048742011-09-05T07:10:21.352-07:002011-09-05T07:10:21.352-07:00I've always said "work hard, play hard, a...I've always said "work hard, play hard, and eat well" but I've not followed that the last several years. We have a pool & tennis club membership, but we hardly ever go there. In my thirties, I would go on periodic austere diets, and lose 50 pounds. At 6'4" 180 pounds is pretty light, but that's where I'd get. Nowadays I hesitate to reveal how heavy I've gotten. You spend your productive years denying yourself pleasures, in anticipation of a payoff, and we've certainly done that. But I didn't anticipate the computer age, and how much time I spend sitting, reading and typing. As a part-time writer, I would already do that some, but the blogging and surfing keeps me sitting for hours every day, when I'm not traveling. And even then. . . .

I wouldn't change anything we've done. We eat terribly well, and no junk food. In deference to my kidneys and blood sugar, I no longer eat much candy, no soft drinks, or gum. But otherwise. . . .

I remember in the old days, driving back from a day photographing on Pt. Reyes, I'd stop in at Tomales, pick up a Haagen-Dazs and pig out on the long drive back. But I'd have spent the entire day hiking around with a 50 pound pack of equipment, so the effects were tempered.

Fasting. I used to think it the province of Buddhists and the Yoga-Granola People. Maybe it's worth a try.Curtis Favillehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06213075853354387634noreply@blogger.com
